2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Review

Simple, you get the most stylish and fastest road-legal car in the world. Earlier this month, Aston Martin released photos of this upcoming beast and it just looks intimidating with its highly aerodynamic stance. The beast is christened 2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001.

In addition to the road-going version, there will be a track-only variant which Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin claims will be as quick if not quicker than an F1 racer. All this is courtesy of the experience and technical expertise in design and engineering which Andrian Newey, Red Bull’s Chief Technical Officer brings to the table.

It’s an extraordinary-looking thing, with a tiny passenger compartment and a motorsport-style “keel” running beneath the car, and the 001’s aerodynamic mission is demonstrated by the fact that the face it presents to the wind is as much gap as it is bodywork. According to Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s chief creative officer, approximately 100 copies will be built the final figure is still being decided with two variants, one being fully street legal and one being track only. We’ll have to wait until later for the full shock-and-awe statistics, but the critical one comes with confirmation from the man who led Red Bull’s side of the project, chief technical officer Adrian Newey, that the track version aims to be as fast as an LMP1-class Le Mans endurance racer.

2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Specs

One look at the 2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 and you are likely to mistake it for a screenshot from a video game due to its futuristic looks. The design is highly aerodynamic, a prerequisite in the bid to make the model the fastest street-legal car in this planet. Carbon-fiber is used unsparingly on the structure and body panels. Its down-force is generated via under-floor aerodynamics. This also created room for Mark Reichman, Aston’s design chief to create a stylish design that is easily recognizable as an Aston Martin.

The model features a short nose, very short overhangs and a long rear deck. Its wheel arches are very muscular while its canopy-like roof stretches over the engine. Though you might not realize it, the model’s chassis is based on an open-wheel design similar to the one used on F1 cars.

Aston Martin had very little to say about the AM-RB 001’s exterior. What we do know so far is that the body will be built around a carbon-fiber structure and that the aerodynamic kit will deliver “unprecedented levels of downforce in a road-legal car.” Also, the British firm said that much of this downforce is generated through underfloor aerodynamics, which probably means that the chassis is derived from Red Bull’s Formula One design.

As far as styling goes, the AM-RB 001 is very similar to an LMP1 Le Mans prototype. It has a low-slung silhouette, a short nose, long rear deck, extremely short overhangs, muscular wheel arches, and a canopy-like roof that extends above the engine. The front end has very little in common with current Aston Martin models outside the badge and the headlamps. The same goes the rear and pretty much every other element of this car. This is not surprising, however, as the AM-RB 001 is supposed to be an Aston Martin like no other.

At the rear, the AM-RB 001 features a tunnel-like part which channels air that gets in from the nose. The rear also features a thin wing and a low-slung rear section of the roof which illustrates the extent of the model’s complex aerodynamics. The hypercar is believed to be 80% production ready meaning an official public debut is not that far away.

However, Newer said that they in fact had a test buck where he and Andy sat next to each other in the passenger compartment despite Newer’s tall body and Andy’s stout proportions. According to Aston Martin, it was important for the model to have a passenger compartment.

Further, Newer revealed that the model will feature electronic driver-assist technologies like stability and traction control but the technologies will be switchable in case the driver wants to be more engaged when driving the car. It will also feature active aerodynamics which varies to increase speed.

Being the fastest car in the world is not Aston’s sole goal in this project; rather, the automaker aims to also offer an impressive driving experience unlike the Bugatti Chiron which does not offer an engaging driving experience.

2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Engine

Aston Martin and the Red Bull Formula One Racing Team are keeping engine details under wraps.  However, rumor is rife that a naturally aspirated V-12 engine will be used. This is a bit surprising considering the industry is edging to turbocharged mills.

The engine will be mounted behind the seats, and helps achieve the 1:1 power-to-weight ratio; this ratio is measured in horsepower per kg. The mill will be paired with a race-spec transmission system. The powerful engine will help the model achieve a 0-60 mph run in less than 3 seconds.

Mostly known for its V-12-powered grand tourers and the race cars based on them, Aston Martin isn’t the kind of automaker you’d go to in search of a supercar. There is one exception though. In 2009, the Brits launched the One-77, a coupe that was powered by the most powerful, naturally aspirated engine at the time, was loaded with state-of-the-art features, and built in extremely limited numbers. Come 2016 and Aston Martin unveiled its first full-fledged supercar. Called the AM-RB 001, it was developed in collaboration with Red Bull Racing and will hit public roads in 2018.
