Say you like the small but versatile footprint of a hatchback like the Honda Fit, but want something a little larger and more premium. Perhaps the utility of a Mini Countryman is appealing, but you can’t get past the quirky styling or interior. The 2016 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer could be your answer.

First, the Active Tourer shares little with the squat, rear-wheel-drive coupe that BMW also calls the 2 Series. The Active Tourer is instead a compact, front-wheel-drive four-door that’s closer in mechanical identity to the latest Mini Cooper and the upcoming BMW 1 Series. It’s a little longer than the Fiat 500L, shorter than the similarly styled Ford C-Max and lower than both. Even by the standards of BMW’s finely sliced portfolio of wagons, small crossovers and long-bodied fastbacks, the Active Tourer is a bit of an oddball.

The BMW 2 Series is a compact luxury car, which was originally launched last year as 2014 year model.  It is available in several body styles and first variants that were presented are coupe and convertible models. Those two models are considered as direct successors to BMW 1 Series and they were unveiled in 2014 North American International Auto Show. Beside these two variants, Bavarian car maker also prepares some new variants too, which will come as 2016 year models. It is expected that 2016 BMW 2 Series will come with new MVP body style variant and also with M package.

2016 BMW 2 Series Specs

This variant was unveiled in 84th Geneva International Motor Show 2014. First units will come late this year, but for North American market it won’t be available before next year, so it is expected to come as 2016 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This model will be the first one from Bavarian automaker front engine, front wheel drive layout. It will be based on Active Tourer Concept and is designed as direct competitor of Mercedes Benz B-Class. In mechanical segment of the car, 2016 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will share many similarities with its British cousin Mini Countryman, also built by BMW.

“Space-functional concept” was the working title of the five-seat BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and next year’s seven-seat Grand Tourer. But what’s in a name?… More than you think, especially when the initial connotation is MPV people mover a.k.a. minivan. Vans of all sizes account for the fastest-shrinking segment of the market, and soccer moms and dads don’t fit the typical BMW customer profile.

The M version of 2016 BMW 2 Series will use the same F21 platform as coupe and convertible models, but it will be different in many ways. It will have all of characteristics of modern sports car aggressive look, great performances, extremely fun for drive and, at the end, great fuel economy. Thanks to the use of new lightweight materials, it will be much lighter, which guarantees excellent performances. The new BMW 2 Series will be powered with 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 engine that can also be found in 235i variant.

2016 BMW 2 Series Changes

2016 BMW 2 Series Engine

Although BMW hasn’t confirmed specifications for U.S.-bound models yet, we expect a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine to power the 218i base model. Generating 136 horsepower, the small power plant will pair with a standard six-speed manual or available six-speed automatic transmission. The 225i model will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 231 hp and an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW says the 225i should accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 6.8 seconds.

The 2 Series Active Tourer is BMW’s first front-wheel-drive production model, and its first available with frugal, nonhybrid three-cylinder engines. The 1.5-liter units in question are the 136-hp turbo gas engine installed in the 218i and the 116-hp diesel fitted to the 218d, both introduced last year in the new Mini, which shares its basic architecture with the five-door 2 Series and the 2016 X1 replacement. Four-wheel drive is a $2700 extra for the 231-hp 225i turbo and the 190-hp, 220d diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder models. An eight-speed automatic is standard on every 225i and on the 220d xDrive. The only automatic compatible with the three-cylinder engines is the ancient, underwhelming six-speed Steptronic.

Befitting its shape, the Active Tourer should feature a handsome cabin with impressive flexibility. The rear seat slides fore and aft and folds down in a 40/20/40 configuration. A fold-flat front passenger seat is optional. BMW lists the Active Tourer’s cargo capacity ranging from 16 cubic feet behind the second row to a maximum of 53 cubic feet (bear in mind these are based on European interior measurements, which differ from American standards). An available power tailgate can be further optioned with a hands-free opening feature that works when you swipe a foot under a sensor.
