2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Changes

After BMW updated the 3 Series sedan and wagon, it was just a matter of time before the same upgrades were features on the Gran Turismo version of the series. The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo was only introduced recently in 2013 as a smaller version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo.

BMWs Gran Turismo models haven’t exactly been embraced by the faithful, and we know that the brand’s U.S. brass has not been especially keen on adding the hunchbacked hatches to its portfolio. But the Americans had little choice. Now BMW is updating the GT version of the 3-series, and the changes are fairly significant. They do not, however, alter the proportions of the tallish, long-wheelbase hatchback with its higher center of gravity and styling that unfortunately evokes the Honda Accord Crosstour. Or, as BMW puts it, its “sportiness combined with the elegance of a coupe.”

The new facelift is actually the first upgrade the model has received. Since its debut, the model has managed to create a niche albeit at a slow pace across the world. Many of its enthusiasts love its excellent sporting character that blends in the functionality of the 3-Series Touring, Sporting character of the 3 series sedan and the elegant character of the 3 Series coupe.  The Bavarian manufacturer has tweaked its sporting character for 2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo in a bid to attract even more customers.

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Concept

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Redesign

The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is the latest variation of the company’s iconic 3 Series sedan and was introduced in 2013, two years after the standard, sixth-generation four-door made its public debut. Developed with customers looking for a smaller, sportier version of the 5 Series GT in mind, the 3 Series GT has a longer wheelbase, taller body, and hatchback-like rear end compared to the standard 3 Series. Engine options are virtually the same, except for the M version, which has yet to be offered on the GT model as of 2016.

The cabin has also been greatly redesigned for more premium comfort and convenience.  The rear passengers get to experience plenty of legroom compared to the standard 3 Series sedan due to the GT’s 4.33 inches longer wheelbase. Passengers also get to sit around two inches higher compared to the wagon and sedan.

The center stack features a chrome surround. There is also a chrome trim on the console controls, wood inserts and an option for different color themes for the cabin. Leather is the standard upholstery material.

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Specs

On the exterior, the 3 Series Gran Turismo adopts many styling cues from the 3-Series sedan and wagon. However, unlike the sedan and wagon, the GT rides on the extended wheelbase adopted from the China-exclusive sedan. The exterior of the new model has been refined for 2017. It now features a matte-chrome exterior trim.

At the front, the biggest change is the new LED headlights which are hosted in new clusters. The automaker has also added LED fog lights and modified the bumper. At the rear, there are new LED taillights with new graphics which make the rear look more aggressive.

The 2017 Gran Turismo will look a bit different, too, although you may have to be a BMW fiend to notice the changes. Both models now come with standard matte-chrome exterior trim and LED headlights; a new 19-inch wheel design is available. There are slight changes to the option packages, as well, with a focus on improved connectivity features.

The GT features only a few nips and tucks on the outside. There are mild changes in the front and rear bumper areas, but the real highlight of the update are the new standard LED headlamps with new clusters and LED fog lamps. Around back, the GT sports updated taillights with a new LED pattern that gives it a more aggressive stance. BMW now offers two new metallic finishes and the flashy Estoril Blue hue. The latter is available exclusively for the M Sport trim, but customers opting for Sport Line or Luxury Line have plenty of colors to choose from thanks to the vehicle’s extensive palette. As always, buyers looking to stand out can pick between the numerous bespoke hues available through the Individual program.

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Engine

As before, the 3-series Gran Turismo shares a lot of sheetmetal with the 3-series sedan and Sports Wagon, but it rides on the wheelbase of the China-only stretched sedan. Inside, the rear seat area is positively huge, there’s a big and flexible cargo hold, and passengers sit more than two inches higher than in the sedan or wagon.

Just like the outgoing model, customers will have an array of exterior colors to choose from.  There are two new metallic finishes while the M Sport trim will be offered with an exclusive Estoril Blue.  For a more personalized appeal, buyers will chose various options offered in the “Individual Program”. The model rides on 19-inch wheels.

Technology-aside, the sedan gained extra chrome around the center stack and console controls, new wood inserts, and new colors and leather trim variants. As far as space goes, the configuration remained unchanged, meaning rear-seat passengers will continue to benefit from the extra legroom that comes with the 4.33-inch longer wheelbase. Up front, the seating position is raised by 2.32 inches compared to the standard 3 Series offering the driver excellent all-around visibility.

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Engine

The Gran Turismo features the same lineup of engines like the standard 3 Series models. The model comes with a number of both petrol and diesel engines. In the U.S.A., only two drive-trains will be offered.  They include the 330i which replaces the 328i and 340i which replaces the 335i. The 330i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine which is capable of 252 hp while the 340i is equipped with a 3.0 L turbo 6-cylinder mill which pumps out 326 hp.

Other markets will have a turbocharged 2.0 L, engine capable of producing 184 horses. Diesel engines will also be offered in other markets. Five diesel drive-trains will be on offer. All the diesel mills have a displacement of 2.0 liters: however, they are differently tuned to produce different levels of power.

The engine on the base 318d produces 150 hp and 190 horses on the 320d trim. Moving up, the same engine is tweaked to produce 224 horses on the 325d. On the 330d, the engine produces 258 hp while on the top-of the range 335d, the engine produces 313 horses.
