2016 Chevrolet Spark Specs

Chevrolet’s zippy Spark minicar was a fun little runabout before, but was a little too goofy and cramped for some to consider for a daily runabout. Thankfully, the Spark gets a total, more sophisticated redesign for 2016 that looks like it improves the vehicle without losing any of its charm.

The fully redesigned 2016 Chevy Spark was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this week. The new Spark features a more powerful engine, a longer wheelbase, newly available safety features and updated interior and exterior styling.

The new Spark has a sleeker appearance, thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase, and an overall height about 1.6 inches (40 mm) lower than the current model. The lower profile reduces aerodynamic drag to help improve efficiency and interior changes maintain the Spark’s traditionally generous headroom.

It is also built on an all-new, more robust architecture that serves as the foundation for its more sophisticated driving experience. The stronger body structure enabled engineers to tune ride and handling more precisely, for greater feelings of control and refinement, while fostering a quieter ride.

“At its core, the new Spark is still the fun, agile urban car that made the first-generation model so popular, but it delivers that fun driving experience with greater sophistication,” said Sam Basile, executive chief engineer. “And while it’s a truly global car, it is targeted for more developed vehicle markets, allowing engineers to focus more precisely on the materials and technologies that resonate with customers in those markets.”

2016 Chevrolet Spark Release Date

The little Spark has been somewhat of a surprising entry in the modern Chevy lineup in the US. Given its diminutive stature, you might have expected the slightly larger Sonic to cannibalize the tiny sibling’s sales, but that hasn’t happened. The Bowtie moved 39,159 Sparks in the US in 2014, a 14.7 percent boost from the previous year. Now at the 2015 New York Auto Show, the latest generation is being unveiled with a new engine and much improved styling.

2016 Chevrolet Spark Specs

An all-new instrument panel design with an advanced liquid crystal display (LCD) features a prominent “center stack” for the infotainment and climate system controls. The Spark’s signature color-matched instrument panel décors are updated with trapezoidal air outlets compared with round outlets on the current model.

The Spark’s all-new MyLink radio features a capacitive-touch color display, with an icon-based interface similar to smartphones and other electronic devices. And like a smartphone, the capacitive-touch display allows swiping, pinching and other gestures for quick, easy operation.

Chevy is packing the interior with better quality materials and improved tech. Chevy’s latest seven-inch MyLink system sits in the center stack with a capacitive touchscreen, and it now comes with a physical volume control and other buttons for easier use. All models also get a rearview camera, and a LCD instrument cluster remains in front of the driver. The available suite of safety systems includes Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Side Blind Spot Alert.

The designers kept the body-colored interior accents that lent a sense of whimsy and fun to the old car but also added the latest from GM’s tech drawer. OnStar with a 4G LTE data connection and onboard Wi-Fi are available, as are rear parking sensors; a backup camera is standard. A new, capacitive-touch seven-inch MyLink infotainment screen works with new volume and accessory hard buttons on the dashboard to make its use more intuitive (the old Spark’s volume could be adjusted via an on-screen slider that could be finicky), and there’s now an “advanced” dot-matrix LCD digital gauge cluster. We’re pretty sure the words “advanced” and “dot matrix” haven’t been used in the same sentence for promotional purposes since 1987, but at least the little gauge screen is more interesting than an analog cluster.

New volume control and other physical buttons reduce complexity and enhance the system intuitiveness. Complementing MyLink to enhance Spark’s connectivity is available OnStar with 4G LTE built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on.

As far as the interior of the 2016 Chevy Spark goes, the cabin will come with extensive updates. The costumers can expect to find a reshaped dashboard with Chevrolet’s newest MyLink infotainment system, located in the center stack with a capacitive-touch color display, a modified instrument cluster with a liquid display (LCD), and softer upholstery all around. More legroom and shoulder room in the rear, will also going to be an important characteristic of the interior. Otherwise, some other major changes are not expected compared to the previous model.

2016 Chevrolet Spark Engine

The 2016 Chevy Spark will be powered by all-new 1.4-liter petrol engine. This small-displacement Ecotec engine is able to produce 98 horsepower (73kW) which represent a 16% more power than previous powerplant. In order to reduce overall car mass to improve performance and efficiency, the cylinder block and head is made of aluminum. The new Chevy Spark 2016 comes with 5-speed manual transmission or dual-range continuously variable transmission. With this CVT transmission the new Spark will have fuel efficiency rated at 40 mpg on highway.

The 2016 Spark is powered by an all-new 1.4L engine that is part of GM’s new, global family of Ecotec small-displacement engines. It offers an estimated 98 horsepower (73 kW) a 16-percent increase over the current model. Engineered to deliver strong performance with excellent efficiency, the new Ecotec engine family represents a clean-sheet design and engineering process, leveraging the diverse experience of GM’s global resources.

The 2016 Spark is now more muscular than the 89-hp Smart Fortwo and the 94-hp Scion iQ pipsqueaks. Its 98 horsepower might come courtesy of a new 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine adopted from General Motors’ new Ecotec small-engine family. Up 0.2 liters on the outgoing Spark’s 1.2-liter four, the 1.4-liter engine features an aluminum block and an aluminum head with an integrated exhaust manifold. Official fuel-economy estimates are forthcoming, but today’s Spark tops out at 31/39 mpg city/highway, and so the new car achieving a highway number over 40 wouldn’t be unexpected.

“The new Ecotec architecture represents the most advanced and efficient family of small-car gas engines in GM’s history,” said Tom Sutter, global chief engineer. “Along with performance and efficiency targets, we’ve also aimed for segment-challenging refinement with low noise and vibration and we’ve hit the bulls-eye.”

Under the 2016 Spark’s hood is a new 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 98 horsepower, which is 14 more horsepower than the 2015 model’s engine makes. Car and Driver notes that while a 98-horsepower car is typically nothing to write home about, they expect that the extra 14 horsepower should help it feel quicker in everyday driving. The Spark is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Chevrolet estimates that the Spark will return 40 mpg highway when equipped with the CVT, which is slightly higher than the 39 mpg highway EPA rating of the 2015 model.

Spark’s new 1.4L features an aluminum cylinder block and head, which helps reduce the vehicle’s overall mass to enhance performance and efficiency. The cylinder head also incorporates an integrated exhaust manifold, which further reduces weight – an attribute that contributes to increased vehicle efficiency and a more favorable front-to-rear weight balance, for a more responsive driving experience.
