2016 Chevy Cruze Changes

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will be among the first models designed atop GM’s new global compact car platform, making the next-generation car a little longer and roomier inside. The bad news: It won’t be here for awhile. GM says additional engineering work will delay the new Cruze by about a year.

The next generation of the Chevy Cruze is arriving with 2016 year model. For this year, it was announced that new platform is prepared, so we will have many changes. First of them, visible, will be extra space and length of the 2016 Chevy Cruze. However, we need to wait more than a year for it, since company is planning launch late in next year. All potential buyers and enthusiasts will probably be pleased with this first car made on global platform from GM. So, expectations are big from this compact sedan.

2016 Chevy Cruze Release Date

The new 2016 Chevy Cruze has been spotted on the streets of Detroit without any camouflage. Beside more edgy design it will come with new pack of engines. Final look and specs we will know after its official announcement on the next November’s L.A. Auto Show.

2016 Chevy Cruze Redesign

GM has found the Cruse as their one of the best-selling vehicle, not just in North America, but worldwide. Even it will be new generation vehicle, we don’t expect any radical changes and experiments from the company. Car was tested on the streets already, and it was exposed to spy shots which couldn’t miss this opportunity. Styling  will be slightly longer, but with same proportion as previous models. Longer wheelbase will increase space between seats in cabin. Aerodynamic will be slightly improved with few new shapes on the exterior of the 2016 Chevy Cruze. Inside, more legroom on the back seats and increased cargo area will be highlights. Also, latest technology features will be installed in the car, which could appear in hatchback and coupe versions for US market.

2016 Chevy Cruze Specs

The face of the car spotted here isn’t much different from that of the Chinese model, but it does tie in more to the U.S. vehicle lineup. The bisected grille mimics that of the Sonic and also relates better to the rear end of the vehicle than does the Chinese front end. The body styling is the same tidy, if fairly bland, design shown in Beijing. It’s worth noting that the cars pictured here appear to be lower-level trims, as they’re missing the HID headlamps and LED daytime running lamps found both on the Chinese debutant as well as the Cruze we spied last month. Expect those to appear here on the higher-end models.

The redrawn exterior of the 2016 Chevy Cruze adds to its curb appeal, starting with a more aggressively contoured front fascia. Sporting a bolder variation of the division’s signature dual-port grille that was introduced on the 2015 model, the Cruze has sleeker LED-infused headlamps and foglamps. Its profile features pronounced sculpting on the doors and a new Impala-style character line in the rear quarter panel. Rounding out the refresh is a new decklid with integral spoiler lip, trimmer taillamps and new chrome trim.

The Cruze is a big-selling car both in America and globally, so getting the next one right and maintaining that momentum is critical. The unique front end seen here also shows that the General is tailoring the appearance of the car to the markets in which it will be sold. We don’t expect to see many more versions of the nose crop up, but it’s nice to see GM avoid taking a one-size-fits-all approach to styling.

2016 Chevy Cruze Engine

It is still to be decided which engines will be installed for the new 2016 Chevy Cruze. Few variants are mentioned in rumors, but with car which is still in developing stadium, we can only guess what will be final version. One of the powertrains mentioned is GM’s new Ecotec engine. It will be 1.5-liter four-cylinder with output somewhere around 150 hp. Also, 1.4-l turbo four-cylinder is a candidate to replace current 1.8-l engine for base models. One option introduced in 2014 could be carried over. It will be diesel engine, turbocharged 2.0-liter. Standard transmission should be 6-speed manual, and automatic gearbox will be offered in some rim packages. It is not impossible that 2016 Cruze will be packed with new GM’s eight-speed automatic gearbox.

A 1.5-liter four-cylinder from GM’s new Ecotec engine family will likely replace the current 1.8-liter base engine. Although smaller, the new turbocharged four-cylinder shouldn’t have trouble topping the current engine’s 138 horsepower. Whether the Cruze needs a second small turbo four-cylinder leaves the future of the current car’s optional 1.4-liter uncertain. The turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel introduced with the 2014 model year, however, is almost certain to carry over.

It’s possible some of the current Cruze’s engines could carry over, but the most likely candidate there is the torquey and powerful 2.0-liter turbo-diesel, which would continue to give Chevy a foothold in the diesel market in the U.S. The rest of the lineup is likely to adopt GM’s new small-engine architecture; in Beijing, the Chinese car showcased a more powerful 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four. Transmission choices should include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic among the more exotic possibilities.

As previously reported, General Motors’ new family of Ecotec engines will find their way into this D2XX-based Cruze. The 2.0-liter diesel engine is expected to return due to its relatively recent introduction, while the new 1.4-liter turbo I4 and 1.5-liter naturally aspirated unit introduced in the Chinese model may also appear in the North American version of the car. As far as transmissions go, the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission from the Chinese variant will likely carry over, as will the six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is not out of the question, either, although would be slightly redundant with the dual-clutch auto.
