2018 Chevrolet Equinox Specs

The 2018 Chevy Equinox is said to be gearing for an introduction into the automotive market with a number of design changes. With that being said, the changes are believed to result in heightened fuel economy as well as overall efficiency for consumers. Additionally, it does warrant mentioning, that this forthcoming model will be ushering in a third generation of the vehicle and with that, it may find itself sold as a 2017 model variant according to a rumor.

If you are interested in for the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, you not only one. The Equinox is one of Chevrolet most successful crossovers having sold over a million units since in North America alone since the second-generation model was launched in 2010; the model is more popular in Europe.  Ever since its initial inception in 2005 in the compact SUV market which was fairly new at the time, the vehicle has gained a lot of popularity. Its second generation was starting to look a bit rusty and needed an extensive refresh.

Camouflaged prototypes serve their purpose. They skew the public’s eye and make our jobs harder to decipher details over an upcoming new vehicle. However, once they begin meandering onto public roads, all bets are off for anyone to take photos.

The second-generation Chevy Equinox hit showrooms for the 2010 model year and went through a refresh for the 2016 model year. Despite the refresh, the second-gen model is due to be replaced in the next year or two, so it should come as no surprise that we’ve caught the next-generation Equinox testing in southern Europe. For this testing session, the test mule had a full team on board, which is a sign that the next Equinox might be used as the basis for the Opel and Vauxhall branded Antara. In this set of spy shots, the next-gen Equinox is in its early testing stages, so it is covered in camo and wearing a three-piece suit to cover up a majority of the details. At this point, it is even sporting exterior decoy lighting and is lacking a proper exhaust pipe, but it does look like the roof slopes down a little more in the rear.

That is precisely what occurred as this 2018 Chevrolet Equinox prototype was spied in Germany. As you flip through the spy shots at Auto Evolution, take note of the backseat passenger. He’s wearing his middle finger high, and proud for the photographer.

Despite its popularity, buyers of the outgoing model complained of its non-impressive fuel economy and its lack of adequate safety features, areas Chevrolet is keen on improving with the new model. Already we have seen some of these improvements in the spy shots our photographers have managed to capture.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Specs

The 2018 model year variant of the Equinox received interior enhancements as well as an exterior facelift. The facelift will include the front grille that will now be deeper and feature horizontal chrome details. Additionally, there will be new trim levels presented to consumers that include the following: The L (which will replace base level) as the LS trim level moves to the second tier. The trim levels of LS and LTZ will remain but will include more features as the LT trim level will remain unchanged. The trim levels of LT1 and LT2 will no longer be available for the forthcoming offering of the 2018 Chevy Equinox. The vehicle will be placed upon the compact platform of D2XX which will offer the vehicle a reduction of weight. Moreover, the new edition to the Equinox portfolio will present to consumers as a more attractive vehicle to a larger consumer base.

As the story usually goes with early test mules, our photographers weren’t able to get close enough to get any shots of the interior. Considering the refreshed model for 2016 didn’t get too many updates inside, it’s safe to say that the next-gen model will probably feature a redesigned interior. The interior of the current Equinox already has pretty upscale materials, so I wouldn’t expect to see any improvement in overall materials, but GM will likely bring a better fit and finish where it can. Expect to see a new instrument cluster with a larger information screen, a revised center stack that can support an eight-inch touchscreen display and a more simplified layout of buttons and controls. As we move into the future, the infotainment systems will start controlling more of the interior functions like the heating and air conditioning, so there should be fewer buttons on the next-gen model.

However, I am of the view that even if they got close enough, the cabin wouldn’t have revealed much. This is because the model is still far away from its on sale date meaning the cabin styling is not yet ready. Most likely, the automaker was only testing the model to see how it responds in the streets.

We understand that the vehicle will have improved features to offer a more comfortable driving experience. According to rumors, there will be a 7.0-inch touch-screen. It will also feature an OnStar system with 4GLTE connectivity as well as WI-Fi hotspots. There will also be a rearview camera. For entertainment, the vehicle will feature a radio and a quality sound system.  For rear entertainment, there will be a pair of tablets mounted on the headrests of the front seats.

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox will be completely revised. It will be based on a new compact platform referred to as the D2XX platform. The new platform will result in a reduced curb weight which will have a direct impact on fuel economy and performance. The new vehicle looks much more sportier than the outgoing model. The front is where most changes lie. First, the model will have a new grille flanked by revised LED projector headlights and DRLs on LT and LTZ trims. The front will also feature new fog lights. According to credible reports, higher trim levels will feature a larger grille with a chrome accenting.

As said earlier, the vehicle our spy shots captured testing was under heavy camouflage hence we cannot tell much of its boy design. However, it is clear the rear will sport redesigned bumper inserts and dual-element taillights. In addition, rumor has it that base models will ride on 17-inch wheels while higher trims will get 18 inches.

Moving over to the side, we can’t make out anything of the fenders, but it looks like the A-pillar is sitting more upright, making the front taller and potentially increasing interior headroom for front passengers. The room looks to slope downward more in the rear and, based on the amount of padding on the rear quarter; we’ll see that stationary quarter glass take on a new shape and size. Padding covers the majority of the side, but there are hints that the character line that runs from the front wheel well to the rear on the current model will carry over in a more dominant form. The lower sides are unpadded but show practically no character so the production-ready version will probably have some kind of cladding comparable to that seen on the current-generation model.

Other body panels were under camouflage meaning they have been revised. Once we get a shot of the vehicle without camouflage or the automaker reveals more information we will readily update you.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Reviews

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Engine

According to a number of online reports, the new model variant of the Equinox will garner its power from a 2.4-liter power unit. This unit will be able to provide an output of upwards of 182 hp horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. This is said to be the base engine for the vehicle line. In addition, the consumer will also be able to opt for a 3.6-liter V-6 power unit that is able to deliver an estimated 310 hp and 272 pounds per feet of torque. This engine option will find itself smartly mated with a six-speed transmission. It is also expected that the Equinox will deliver a hybrid powertrain option to automotive consumers although the automaker has not release specifics regarding that aspect.

However, rumor has it that the model will feature the same lineup of engines as the Buick Envision.  If this is true, then expect to find a 2.5 L, 4-cylinder engine under the hood of base models.

The second engine will be turbocharged, a fact we can see in one of our spy shots where the front bumper is removed to reveal an intercooler of the turbocharged engine. The Buick is powered by a 2.0 L, turbocharged engine but according to rumors, Chevrolet will use a 1.5 L engine like the one on the Malibu sedan to balance power with fuel economy.

The 2018 Equinox has still not lost any of its heavy camo, leaving greater design details to be desired. We’ve said it once before, but expect the latest faces from the 2016 Cruze and Volt to be an influencer up front. As for power, it’s rumored the Buick Envision’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will serve as a base, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to become an option.

Both engines will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission but since the models are still far away, the automaker could hook it up with a 9-speed automatic transmission which GM is working on in partnership with Ford The models will be offered with front-wheel drive as standard  though all-wheel drive will be available.
