A short spy video shot in Italy by an intrepid biker suggests Fiat will take on the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works and the Nissan Juke Nismo with a more powerful version of the new 500X crossover prepared by Abarth. When it goes on sale next year, the range-topping 500X will earn the honor of being Abarth’s first-ever crossover.

The upgraded drivetrain will be complemented by a long list of exterior enhancements including 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped by low-profile tires, a more muscular-looking front bumper with a deep air vent, side skirts on both ends, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and twin exhaust pipes out back. Additionally, the Abarth will forgo all off-road prowess and ride noticeably lower than a stock 500X thanks to a sport-tuned suspension designed to keep body roll in check.

2017 Fiat 500X Engine

Official technical details are few and far between but Italian media outlets speculate the hot-rodded crossover could be powered by an evolution of the turbocharged 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine that is found under the hood of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde and the 4C. If that’s the case, the 240-horsepower turbo four will likely be bolted to a dual-clutch automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles, though whether the 500X Abarth will be front- or all-wheel drive is not known. Bigger brakes all around will keep the extra power in check.

The official details have not been released to-date so they are actually very few and far between. However, Italian media outlets are trying to fill in the gaps by their own speculations and the spying out that they are doing. With this hot-rodded crossover, buyers can expect to enjoy a turbocharged 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine.

Under its hood, reports indicate that the 500X Abarth could come with the same 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider . This engine is also rumored to grace the 2018 Fiat 124 Abarth Spider . Like the 124 Spider , Fiat would likely detune the 4C -sourced engine to the tune of 200 horsepower.

While it would stink to not get the full power of this tiny four-pot, 200 ponies would likely be plenty for the tiny crossover .

The big debate about this hot crossover is whether it will have all-wheel drive or not. Common sense says that it would have to have its power sent to all four wheels, but some reports indicate that Fiat will likely keep it front-wheel drive to save weight.

The new 2017 Fiat 500x makers are also focusing on providing consumers with all of the needed safety features to keep the driver and their passengers safe. Since the engine has changed greatly, consumers will find that they have included bigger brakes so that drivers can keep all of this extra power that has been added in check.
