2016 Ford Mustang Changes

For the 2016 model year, Mustang fastback and convertible welcome the return of the iconic California Special Package and Pony Package two iconic Mustang trim levels made popular in the 1960s. Several other new options, including new stripes and wheels, allow owners to make their pony car as individual as they are.

Fans have been clamoring for the return of hood vent-integrated turn signals for years, and in a nod to heritage Ford is honoring the request, bringing back the popular feature as standard equipment for owners of the 2016 Mustang GT. First offered on the 1967 Mustang, secondary indicators in the hood vents would come to represent an iconic piece of pony car DNA. Now, this segment-exclusive feature will serve as an additional “heads-up” for Mustang GT drivers.

2016 Ford Mustang Release Date

The sixth-generation Mustang has been in showrooms for less than a year but already we’ve seen a new track-focused Shelby variant introduced and a host of tuning firms announce mega-horsepower packages for the muscle car icon. Now the Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] has announced a new round of updates for the Mustang’s 2016 model year, whose timing no doubt has been purposefully made to coincide with this week’s arrival of an all-new Chevrolet Camaro.

2016 Ford Mustang Changes

For 2016, California Special models get their own 19-inch wheels, a model-specific grille, front splitter, hood and side stripes, strut-tower brace, some unique interior trim, and a black pedestal spoiler.

On a more substantive note, the 2016 Mustang GT convertible is now offered with the Performance Package. Buyers have to opt for the manual transmission, and get a limited-slip differential, six-piston Brembo front brake calipers, a larger radiator, special chassis and stability-control tuning, beefed-up suspension, and other go-fast features.

Dedicated Mustang fans will remember the turn-signal repeaters tucked in the hood vents of the second-generation 1967–68 pony car. Apparently, Mustang loyalists have been clamoring for the return of this nifty gimmick and Ford delivered: Every 2016 Mustang GT will feature LED turn-signal repeaters recessed under the lip of the hood vents. Is it particularly functional?… Nah, probably not but it’s the kind of throwback nod that Ford loves to make for its devoted following.

Exclusive to Mustang EcoBoost Premium is a fresh take on the Pony Package. With unique 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, tri-bar pony logo on the grille, side stripe and chrome window surround, the fastback Mustang with Pony Package is sure to stand out from the crowd when it arrives in late 2015.

For customers after a stealthier look, Mustang GT will offer a Black Accent Package this fall. Fastback and convertible Mustang GT models with this package will showcase special 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels, black decklid spoiler, dark taillamp trim, and 5.0 and pony logos in black.

For those who prefer their horses turbocharged, the 2016 Mustang EcoBoost Premium can be had with a new Pony pack. The appearance kit includes unique 19-inch polished wheels, a tri-bar grille, side stripes, and chrome trim around the windows. Also for 2016, EcoBoost and GT buyers can option their hardtop cars with either a black-painted roof or factory-painted over-the-top racing stripes in black or silver. (The stripes were previously available on V-6 Mustangs, but Ford tells us the base-model six-banger will not get a black-roof option for 2016.)
