2017 Ford Focus ST280 Concept

Known that the automaker unveiled a more influential adaptation of the Fiesta ST at 2016 motor show in Geneva and called it the ST200 in a reputation of its 147-kW engine, it is expected that this innovative, hotter Focus ST will be offered metric power suffix, as well. If this is the guess, Ford will most likely tune the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine 199kW or 206kW, leading to the ST280 designation for the model year 2017. If this model proves to be investigative of the final manufacturing version, the 2017 Ford Focus ST280 will probably feature a distinctive set of alloy wheels, a more famous front splitter, trim options and unique color.

Though crossovers are slowly tearing into the market for hatchbacks, Europe’s demand for hot hatchbacks is still insatiable. Already Ford sells the standard Focus ST and Focus RS in the European market but still feels there is a gap they haven’t filled.  The automaker thinks there is too much of a gap between the ST and RS since the standard ST comes with a 250 hp power-train while the RS power-train churns out 350 hp.

The Ford Focus RS came back as a 2016 model year vehicle with an all-wheel drive system and with a powerful engine of Ford Mustang. With the lineup apparently complete, it seems the third-generation Focus is to continue unchanged for some years, but it seems that the American automaker has bigger plans for the compact in the form of another performance oriented version for the model year 2017. Although the Focus ST has been on the road testing, it differs greatly from the standard ST version.

After many years of rumors and speculation, the Ford Focus RS returned for the 2016 model year with a Mustang- sourced engine under the hood and all-wheel drive. Back in showrooms after five years, the RS came to the U.S. with a whopping 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet to become the range-topping Focus model as well as the most powerful factory-built hatchback. With the lineup seemingly complete, the third-gen Focus looked set to carry on unchanged for a few years, but it appears that Ford has even bigger plans for the compact in the form of yet another performance oriented model.

However, it is anticipated that the cabin design of the vehicle will be very similar to that of the standard ST200. However, the new vehicle may get some aesthetic touches to validate the elevated cost tag and make it a sturdy competitor to vie efficiently with its only class competitor, the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 2017 Focus hatch comes with the identical interior features, similar to those of the ST200. These comprise Recaro seats upholstered in Charcoal leather, new emblems, lighted scuff plates, restyled door panels with reorganized drag knobs and mirror controls. It is also anticipated that the center console of the new vehicle would come stamped with the ST280 badge.

Our paparazzi weren’t able to take closeups of the car’s interior, but it’s safe to assume that the cabin configuration will be identical to the ST and maybe receive a few extra goodies to justify the higher price tag. We wouldn’t be surprised to see features similar to those added in the ST200, such as the Charcoal leather upholstery for the Recaro seats, illuminated scuff plates, redesigned door panels with repositioned pull handles and mirror controls, and new badges. Again, we don’t know the exact name of this car, but if our assumption proves to be correct, look for an “ST280” badge on the center console.

At the rear, the 2017 ST280 comes outfitted with a brand new roof spoiler and a revamped bumper, but these rear traits will almost certainly find their way on the new vehicle later. A suite of new lightweight alloy wheels that have an elite layout, wearing a new suit of the front and back tires, would round off the exterior changes.

The prototype in the images above is pretty much a standard ST with a stripe option at first glance, but a closer look reveals that Ford is testing a new aerodynamic kit that includes a thin splitter at the bottom of the bumper and a pair of winglets at each front corner. The latter are particularly interesting for a road car, as these features are usually seen on rally-spec vehicles, but it’s not yet clear whether the production version will have them or not. Other than that, every body panel and design element is as standard as they get. We expect the rear section to gain a new roof spoiler and a revised bumper, but these features will probably find their way on the car at a later date. The exterior should be rounded off by a set of new wheels that feature an exclusive design and lighter alloy material.

The exterior styling will be much analogous to that of the standard ST model. The new Ford Focus ST280 2017 comes with a novel aerodynamic kit, which comprises a slender splitter next to the foot of the bumper and a set of two winglets at every front corner. These winglets are particularly good-looking for a streetcar, as these traits are usually seen on race -spec models. Excluding that, each of the body panel and the exterior design element is analogous to that of the standard ST200.

2017 Ford Focus ST280 Engine

The 2017 Focus ST280 comes outfitted with the same powertrain as that of the one exercised in the Focus ST. As a result, the new ST280 comes equipped with a four-cylinder powertrain with the capacity of 2.0 liters. However, it will be delicately tuned to produce additional power than the powertrain of the Focus ST. The powertrain now generates the highest power of 276 horses, which is 24 horses in excess of that of the Focus ST and 74 horses below that of the Focus RS. The powertrain also produces the superior torque of 295 lbs per foot, which is 25 lbs per foot in excess of that of the previous models.

The uprated hatchback should use the same 2.0-liter EcoBoost as the Focus ST, but the four-banger will send more oomph to the front wheels. Revised internals should increase output by at least 20 horsepower in order to bridge the gap between the 252-horsepower ST and the 350-horsepower RS. As previously mentioned, we expect this hatchback to arrive as the ST280, meaning it will benefit from 280 PS (276 horsepower). Torque should increase from 270 to around 295 pound-feet. The extra oomph and the slightly improved aerodynamics should also bring better performance. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph could drop from 5.9 to 5.7 seconds. Top speed on the other hand will likely remain unchanged at 154 mph.

Under the hood, the upcoming 2017 Ford Focus ST280 will feature the same engine as the standard Focus ST. The engine is an EcoBoost 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine. In the ST, this engine produces 252 hp and 270 b-ft of toque. The engine has been tweaked to produce more power in the Focus ST280.

Going by the nametag, the Focus will put up 280 PS which is 276 hp; a 24 hp improvement from the Focus ST. the engine will also produce 295 lb-ft of torque, 25 lb-ft more than the Focus ST.

As you would expect, the increased output translate to a better performance.   The new model will have a better acceleration from 0-60 mph. We expect the new model to do this run in around 5.7 seconds up from 5.9 seconds in the Focus ST but top speed is likely to remain at 154 mph. As for the transmission system, the vehicle will most likely use the same 6-speed system in the ST. We are not sure if an automatic gearbox will be offered. The suspension of the vehicle will be stiffened compared to that of the ST.

The powertrain also offers improved acceleration to the new vehicle that helps it to achieve the velocity of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds from the static mode, which is 0.2 seconds slower when compared to that of the standard ST. However, it acquires the equal maximum speed of 154 mph. The powertrain will be attached with the similar six-rate manual transmission like that of the ST. However, there is no discretionary gearbox for the new vehicle.
