Ford has today unveiled what is likely to debut in Australia no sooner than late next year as the 2017 Ford Kuga, in keeping with the mid-sized SUV’s local scheduling cycle.

In its current form, the Kuga made its Australian debut in early 2013, more than a year after it first debuted in US-market Escape form at the 2011 LA auto show.

2017 Ford Kuga Specs

This model was developed by European division of Ford and it was designed specifically for the European market. However, first generation featured excellent characteristics, so nowadays it is also available in many other parts of the world, including North America where it carries the Escape name now. The 2017 Ford Kuga will have all of the characteristics of 2016 year model. It will include all of the changes, such as refreshed look. New model will come with redesigned front fascia, which will feature company’s new design language. The 2017 Kuga will have pretty much the same fascia as 2015 Ford Edge. Rear end will also follow those changes. When it is about interior, 2017 Kuga will come with smaller novelties such as updated infotainment system or some new standard features.

The central tunnel console has also been reconfigured with a new space-saving electronic parking brake, a revised gearlever design, cupholders that have been moved forward to sit next to the gearlever (freeing up space for a new storage tray ahead of the armrest), a relocated 12V power socket and a new USB port.

The new mobile app is able to remotely lock, unlock and start the car, and can even schedule future starts. Also provided is vehicle information such as location, tyre pressures and battery and fuel levels.

The interior of the 2017 Ford Kuga is luxurious and comfortable. Available are three-row seats that can comfortably accommodate 8-passengers and still retain enough cargo space. The seats are leather wrapped and provide lumbar support that further enhances comfort while driving. A special update is a sunroof installed in this model of 2017 Kuga which is absent in the current versions of Kuga. A large LCD touch screen located on the dashboard simplifies the drivers control and monitoring of the vehicle. Additional interior features include; navigation system, rearview camera, modern infotainment system, parking assistance, Bluetooth connectivity and an automatic climate control. For safety purposes, certain features such as airbags, traction control, stability control 4-Wheel ABS among other features provide safety guarantee to the occupants in cases of a crash.

From the exterior view, this vehicle has received some improvements. The dimensions of the 2017 Ford Kuga have been changed and enlarged. Therefore in other words translates into an enlarged cabin space. The dimensions are as follows; the length being 185-inches and the height is 111- inches. The total wheelbase is 73 inches, and this translates better control of the vehicle at high speeds and on rough terrains. The ground clearance has also been increased when compared to the current models of the Kuga Family. The size of the bumper has also been enlarged and this means that the front elements will be protected fully. The headlights of the 2017 Kuga have also been modified and have been detached from the grille. The tail lights have also been redesigned and have been elevated by few inches. The roof is fitted with modern spoilers that make the car look sportier. The available alloy wheels enhance the driving dynamics. The ground clearance has also been increased and this makes the car more suitable for all terrains.

Styling through the profile is largely unchanged, but stepping around to the rear reveals updated black-framed tail lamps with a reshaped inside edge and new LED lighting, along with a sharpened look to the longer new grab panel.

Design changes in the cabin are limited, with the pre-facelift model already gaining an upgrade to a larger 8.0-inch display (for Australia, that means today) with the newer Sync 2 infotainment system.

2017 Ford Kuga Engine

This SUV operates on a 1.6L four-cylinder EcoBoost Engine that produces an output power of 161 horsepower and a torque of 251 lb-ft. The engine is integrated with a six-speed automatic transmission and operates both on front wheels and all wheel drive. The fuel economy rating according to EPA is 30 mpg when combined. The 2017 Ford Kuga can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph within nine seconds.

Under the bonnet, there are fewer upgrades in the US, the base 2.5 litre naturally aspirated Duratec four-cylinder petrol engine is retained, and while the 180 PS/240 Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged, direct-injected EcoBoost petrol four is new for that market (replacing the 1.6 litre unit), we already received the mill earlier this year in our current Kuga.

We expect no changes for 2017 Ford Kuga. Just like models from previous years, it will be available in many variants. When it is about petrol engines, there will be two units in offer, both with EcoBoost technology. The first one has displacement of 1.6 liter and outputs 148 and 180 horses. The other engine is a 2.0 liter unit, which is good enough for around 240 horsepower. When it is about diesels, there is a 2.0 liter Duratorq engine, which will be available in several variants, with output from 138 to 178 hp.

Two new four-cylinder EcoBoost engines are also featured, including a 182kW/327Nm twin-scroll 2.0-litre turbo unit and a smaller 134kW/250Nm 1.5-litre mill. A six-speed auto is standard across the range, and both new engines also feature auto stop-start.

Although not confirmed with today’s unveiling, the Escape’s two new engines are likely versions of petrol units already offered in Australia. Here, there’s 134kW/240Nm 1.5-litre and 178kW/345Nm options, among others.

The uprated 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine is the real news here first seen on the new Edge, it gains a new, lighter engine block, an aluminium balance shaft, new pistons with a higher compression ratio (9.7:1 vs 9.3:1), new fuel injectors, a Borg-Warner twin-scroll turbocharger and a new integrated exhaust manifold optimised for the new turbine. As a result, it puts out 245 hp and 373 Nm, 5 hp and 7 Nm more than before.
