2016 Jeep Compass Reviews

Like its Sibling, the Patriot, the Compass also seems to be “driving on a thin line”. Like the Patriot, the Compass lacks a host of safety and technologies. However, the two vehicles have managed maintain good sales year in year out, perhaps due to the Jeep nametag. For 2016, Jeep has tried to upgrade the Compass with some new features inside and outside. Despite its shortcomings, the 2016 Jeep Compass is an attractive option for a buyer looking for a bargain-priced crossover that can veer off to the off-roads occasionally.

The 2016 Jeep Compass continues to be a steady seller, just like its cheap-Jeep sibling, the Patriot. There’s little doubt that the Compass’ rock-bottom starting price has a lot to do with it. Those baby-Grand Cherokee looks certainly don’t hurt, either, and the Jeep name has enduring appeal for many shoppers. But that doesn’t change the fact that the Compass is largely subpar and outdated when compared to the competition.

According to reports, the Compass will be replaced next year. This was the reason behind the automaker’s decision to omit the Compass Limited trim from the lineup. To make the Compass more appealing, the automaker has adopted some styling cues from the Grand Cherokee.

2016 Jeep Compass Engine

The 2016 Compass’ base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2.0-liter Sport, while the 2.0-liter Latitude comes with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is mandatory with the base engine.

The EPA estimates fuel economy at 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway) for the 2.0-liter Compass with the five-speed manual. The CVT drops those numbers to 24 mpg combined (22/26).

Optional on front-wheel-drive models and standard with all-wheel drive is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. The five-speed manual is once again offered on the Sport, but otherwise the six-speed automatic handles the shifting — unless you specify Freedom Drive II, which substitutes a CVT with a crawl mode that simulates a 4×4 vehicle’s low-range gearing.

The base Compass will be motivated by a 2.0 L, 4-cylinder powerplant which is good for 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT system. With the 5-speed manual gearbox, the Compass returns 23 mpg in city and 30 mpg on highway drives. With a CVT, the model returns 22 mpg in city and 26 mpg on highway drives. This engine is only offered in FWD.

The second mill is a 2.4 L, 4-cylinder mill which produces 172 horses and 165 lb-ft of torque.  The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed automatic transmission or a CVT system. This engine will be offered in both FWD and AWD drive modes. With a manual and FWD, the model returns 23 mpg in city and 29 mpg on highway , 21 mpg city and 28 mpg on highway with FWD and automatic transmission. AWD with a manual transmission returns 20 mpg in city and 26 mpg on highway.

Refinement has improved, but the base powerplant on the Compass remains a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-4, while top Limited models come with a 172-hp, 2.4-liter version. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on the Sport, while a 6-speed automatic is probably the best option for most buyers. Jeep still offers CVTs throughout the Compass lineup and it’s required to get the model’s most capable Trail Rated four-wheel-drive system that gives you enough to churn through sand or do some modest rock-crawling. Furthermore, fuel economy isn’t all that great for the lineup 30 mpg on the highway at best but that off-road package brings an EPA-rated 20 mpg city, 23 highway, 21 combined.

Opting for AWD with automatic transmission and Freedom Drive I returns 20 mpg in city and 26 mpg on highway while AWD with CVT and Freedom Drive II w/Off-Road package returns 20 mpg in city and 23 mpg on highway drives. The Compass has a maximum towing capacity of 2000 lbs.
