2016 Mazda 2 Design

Mazda has first introduced this great city car in 2003. This smallest Mazda’s car in U.S. has been completely redesigned  since its last introduction as 2011 model. New 2016 Mazda 2 will be based on company’s Kodo design language, and it will keep with the already known Hazumi concept.  Its first debut  new 2016 Mazda 2 had in Paris autoshow. In other markets, new Mazda 2 will be named Demio. As far as exterior design is concerned, new Mazda will suffer many changes. Its body look will have more sporty design and because of new and redesigned lines, it will provide less wind resistance. Let’s start with the front end of the vehicle.

The diminutive Mazda 2 was designed to deliver signature sporty handling and a fun-to-drive character. It’s a standout among subcompacts for its reflexes and an ability to produce driver smiles, but not without flaws revealed by newer competitors. The 2016 Mazda 2 marks the model’s second generation and looks to amend its deficiencies with a styling overhaul, a new chassis and engine, and new technology.

One more hatchback coming, new 2016 Mazda 2. When it comes to small and compact vehicles, Japanese manufacturers like Toyota and Mazda were able to always have a car that is good looking, affordable and reliable. While most of the people don’t think seriously about the compact vehicles, it has become a very important part of the market.

The award for most-improved fuel economy in a single model year goes to the 2016 Mazda 2. Or rather, two model years. There is no 2015 version of the wee zoom-zoom hatch, and we still don’t have confirmation from Mazda on the timing of the 2016 model’s U.S. arrival. But the Environmental Protection Agency has the numbers for the new car, and they’re 23-percent higher (combined rating) versus the outgoing 2.

New 2016 Mazda 2 will also come with new  alloy wheels in sizes from 15 to 16 inches. Just like exterior, interior will be redesigned too. The color that will dominate inside the cabin is black.  Seats will be made of more quality materials, giving the whole five passengers full comfort and luxury. Some of the features that new Mazda will give to its owners are: ABS, electronic brake control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, stability control, six airbags, distribution system impact crash, MP3 connectivity, etc.

One place where the new 2 diverges completely from the Hazumi concept is the interior thankfully. Inside, the Hazumi looked like one of the Voltron lions’ cockpits; as much as I love Voltron, that’s not a high compliment. The production Demio incorporates an elegant, scaled-down version of the 3’s interior. It’s clean and premium-looking. Hold your hand over the badge on the wheel, and you might mistake it for a Volvo style-first interior. Nope, this is a volume hatchback that will probably be motivated by a fuel-sipping four, not a twin-charged fancy Swedish mill.

Most of the changes that new models bring are usually on the outside and the situation is the same with 2016 Mazda 2. The Japanese manufacturer insists that the next generation 2-series is a completely new car, both inside and outside, and not just an upgrade or facelift. According to the latest reports and some images of the car, we notice that it is designed with Kodo design language, like some other Mazda models. Front of the car is much more aggressive and it looks like a more expensive car.

These alone will be worthy upgrades over the current five-speed manual and four-speed automatic units. Factor in a slightly lighter chassis and the new Mazda 2 should improve on its current 0-60 times of 9.9 seconds (manual transmission) and 10.7 seconds (automatic).

While the 2016 Mazda 2 is aggressive on the outside, the cabin is a whole another story. It has been completely redesigned and it has a minimalist look, with less buttons and knobs than ever. The thing that dominates the interior is the 7-inch Mazda connect display. Driver can use the touchscreen display or buttons on the center of the dashboard to control the infotainment system. The whole interior is reimagined and the Japanese manufacturer stated that they are going to use better materials than before. While the interior of the 2016 Mazda 2 is much different than the interior of its predecessor, it is fairly similar to its older brother, the Mazda 3-series.

The 2016 Mazda 2 should also make impressive leaps inside the cabin, starting with a new infotainment system controlled by a dial-button array in the center console and a dash-mounted color display. Smartphone integration and navigation will also be available through the Mazda Connect suite of apps and connected services.

2016 Mazda 2 Engine

It is said that new 2016 Mazda 2 will be underpinned with some combination of three engines:  a 1.3-liter four-cylinder, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and a 1.5-liter diesel four-cylinder. The standard 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine will be able to produce 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. It will come with 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

Probably that’s because Mazda is mum on actual powertrain details for other markets. In Japan, the Demio will get two flavors of Skyactiv engines: a 1.3-liter gas or 1.5-liter diesel. The 1.3-liter unit is set to replace the smaller MZR engines, which were mostly sold abroad except for the 1.5-liter unit in the outgoing Mazda 2. But, to be clear, they’ve said nothing about whether they’ll try to federalize either of the Demio’s Japanese engines.

Mazda is going to offer SkyActiv engines on the 2016 Mazda 2 there will be two petrol engines and one diesel. The two petrol engines are 1.3l and more powerful 1.5l SkyActiv engines. On the other hand, for those who would like to buy a diesel version, the company will offer only one 1.5l SkyActiv-D diesel engine. Potential customers will be able to choose from six speed manual or automatic transmission.

2016 Mazda 2 will have expanded engine range. The engine range also depends of the markets where the new Mazda 2 will sell. According to unofficial information, the engine line-up for the American market is still not known, whiles the European market and in Japan is expected combinations of three engines: 1.3-liter 4-cylinder, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder and 1.5-liter diesel engine with 4 cylinders. It is expected that the model for the US market launch 1.5-liter 4-cylinder unit that is capable of generating a speed of 100 horsepower with 98 lb feet of torque. Current Mazda 2 model has good features, but it can not boast of significant power.

With the six-speed automatic, the 2016 Mazda 2 gets 33 mpg city and 43 mpg highway, a major jump from the old car’s 28/34 mpg. The six-speed manual isn’t far off at 31 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, again a major improvement over the 2014 five-speed model’s 29/35 mpg. The Mazda 2 uses the company’s new 1.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder, which boasts direct injection, high compression, and other internal tricks. It’s shared with the overseas-market Miata and makes 129 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 111 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. Likely, we won’t see the diesel or the smaller 1.3-liter engine, which musters only 91 ponies and 89 lb-ft. That’s way too slow for us Americans.

The current Mazda 2 may be the best-handling car in its class, but it’s not particularly powerful, fast or fuel-efficient. The standard 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine generates just 100 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque, well short of competitors like the Ford Fiesta or Honda Fit. Meager power output can sometimes mean better mpg, but Mazda 2 models equipped with automatic transmissions trail competitors in combined fuel economy (manual transmission models more closely match rivals, but again with less power).

Mazda hasn’t announced a U.S. engine lineup yet, but the Mazda 2 will offer some combination of the three engines offered in Europe and Japan: a 1.3-liter four-cylinder, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and a 1.5-liter diesel four-cylinder.
