2016 Nissan Maxima Hybrid

Nissan teased the look of the next-generation Maxima at the 2014 Detroit auto show with the Sport Sedan concept, and it was quite a looker with an aggressive front end and cool floating roof. Now, we’re getting out very first glimpse at the production version in some new spy shots. Although, It’s plastered with camouflage, underneath you can still see the concept’s design inspiration.

Starting from the front, the biggest influence from the concept is the V-shaped grille with smaller inlets on each side and jagged headlights. Running back from there, on one side the Maxima mule has a black A-pillar, which at least suggests that the floating roof is making it to the production model too.

A role model of how 2016 Nissan Maxima will look was presented almost a year ago, in January this year, 2014, at the Detroit Auto Show, where Nissan showcased Sport Sedan concept. Although new Maxima still isn’t caught without camouflage, based on spy shots, it has the styling cues of the Sport Sedan concept. Aggressive design and powertrain are the same, as for the concept vehicles, while the rear end and some other things are toned down for a production version of 2016 Maxima.

2016 Nissan Maxima release is expected in April next year, at the New York Auto Show, but we already saw some delays in Nissan’s line up so, this could be changed in last moment. Price will feature an increase, so expect to start, at least, around $32,000, but we would be surprised to go even a $1000 more.

2016 Nissan Maxima Specs

2016 model year will mark the start of eight generation, since Nissan originally started the production of Maxima back in 1981. Current, seventh, generation started with 2009 model, and its long-lasting design needed this makeover. 2016 Nissan Maxima changes include major upgrades both inside and out. Front end of the vehicle will feature sculpted hood, V-shaped grille and spiked headlights. These design cues contribute to overall more aggressive appearance of the new Nissan Maxima. Floating roof is yet another thing seen on the concept, that make it to production model, while rear end was most camouflaged, and few things can be said with accuracy. However, it doesn’t seem as sharp-edged as for the concept variant. Another thing on the rear end which is different than the concept version is its coupe-like appearance, which is now different and resembles more of a sedan, which Maxima is.

It’s hard to tell from these photos how the 2016 Nissan Maxima might change in size, as the current car is actually smaller than the Altima. We expect the new Maxima to be bigger than before as it attempts to fill the role of Nissan’s sedan flagship. This more adventurous styling direction should help it better compete with other large sedans like the relatively stylish Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon.

2016 Nissan Maxima Engine

Nissan didn’t reveal any specs regarding the performance of the 2016 Nissan Maxima, at list not officially. According to some information, the engine found under the hood of concept vehicle will be the engine that empowers the real Maxima.

The Sport Sedan concept has a version of Nissan’s 3.5-liter V6 with over 300 horsepower and a CVT powering the front wheels. Though, our spies think it’s possible the production version could offer a hybrid 2.5-liter supercharged four-cylinder to give V6-like power, like the Pathfinder Hybrid.

Powering the new 2016 Nissan Maxima will most likely be a version of Nissan’s 3.5-liter V-6 mated with a CVT. Another more intriguing powertrain could join the sedan’s engine lineup in the form of a performance-oriented Maxima Hybrid, which would use the same setup as the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid. That drivetrain uses a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder in combination with an electric motor to provide equivalent power to a V-6.

Base and only engine seems to be a 3.5-liter V6 with around 300 horsepower and slightly more lb-ft of torque than the previous model’s 261. CVT transmission will also be carried over, while the front-wheel drive continues to be the standard drive configuration. All-wheel drive option will also be available.
