2016 Scion iA Hybrid

The 2016 Scion iA is the first four door car sold under the Scion badge. If this car looks familiar to you, you are right, it is actually the revised Mazda 2 sedan. The Japanese automaker wants to bring this model to the young drivers in the United States. Models sold by Scion are known for having only one trim level and they are super simple to buy. Now, lets see what this car has to offer.

The Scion iA sedan joins the all-new 2016 Scion iM hatchback for a one-two punch in the subcompact and compact segments. The new sans-hatch Scion will arrive in dealerships this fall for an estimated MSRP in the $16,000-range. That’s for a mono-spec model equipped with standard Low-speed Pre-collision safety system and 7-inch multi-media system with voice activation. Because Scion has a no hassle, no haggle Pure Price, customers walk out the door with the same price they saw posted in the dealership.

2016 Scion iA Release Date

After years of selling quirky hatchbacks and sport coupes, the division’s first ever four-door sedan, the Scion iA, debuts at the New York auto show. This car is the result of a partnership between Mazda and Toyota, with Mazda producing the iA.

The Scion iA will likely be slightly smaller and cheaper than the brand’s other New York debut, the 2016 Scion iM hatchback that is based on the European-market Toyota Auris. Scion already showed a concept version of this hatchback, and the production version looks to retain much of the concept car’s looks, according to this front-end teaser photo.

2016 Scion iA Specs

For those who prefer an automatic transmission, the available 6-speed automatic will be intriguing. Engineered for light weight, low friction and a direct-shift feel, the automatic has a bit of a dual personality. It moves the Scion iA off from a standing start with the smoothness only a torque converter automatic can deliver, yet very quickly afterward locks the converter for quicker, more direct shifts and higher fuel economy. For drivers seeking greater torque feel, a Sport Mode feature is available with the flip of a switch.

The situation is similar with the interior. The 2016 Scion iA will have the same interior that Mazda2 has. However, we think that this is really a good thing, especially when you take a look at the nice and clean design of the interior of the Mazda2. The iA will offer the same colors of the interior and similar features, but the interesting thing with every Scion is that it is going to be packed with features. Actually, the specifications given by the company stated that the base Scion model is going to have more features and equipment than the base models of both Mazda and Toyota, which is the part of its appeal. Some of these features are: backup camera, cruise control, push button ignition, keyless entry and the most interesting features of all the infotainment system with knob interface and 7-inch touchscreen display.

Agility is engineered into the Scion iA, not just added on with stiffer springs and shocks. The body structure uses straight beams wherever possible, continuous framework that makes the individual sections function in harmony, and effective positioning of high-tensile steel. Bottom line, it’s strong.

The MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension are tuned for a just-right balance of sporty handling and comfortable ride not normally associated with this segment. Steering and brake system tuning, in particular, received attention more befitting of a sport sedan than an “economy car.” The Scion iA uses a rigid steering mount, which provides a direct yet light feel also unexpected in low-priced, high-MPG models. Progressive braking feel comes to the fore when cornering. Entering the curve, the pedal provides smooth operation, then progresses to a more rigid feel as G-force rises.

Inside, the iA gets chrome accents and soft-touch trim and surfaces, 10-inch fore-aft slide seat adjustment, and standard height adjuster. The steering wheel also tilts and telescopes. The steering wheel has controls for the audio and standard Bluetooth (with voice commands). The audio system comes with a standard seven-inch touch screen display and six speakers. Techies will like the two USB ports and an auxiliary input. A navigation system is a dealer-installed option.

Standard features will include air conditioning, keyless entry, tilt/telescopic steering, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, push-button start, a rear defogger, alloy wheels, and power mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators. The base audio setup is a seven-inch touch-screen Display Audio system with six speakers, Bluetooth hands-free calling and music-streaming capability, voice recognition, USB and analog-input ports, and streaming-app compatibility with Aha, Pandora, and Stitcher services.

The sporty steering wheel has control switches for the audio and standard Bluetooth. Hardly “entry level,” the standard 7-in. Display Audio system has a touch screen, 6 speakers, remote interface and rear-view camera. Pandora®, Aha™ and Stitcher™ come standard, too, providing a huge music, talk and podcast universe when paired with a compatible phone. For those who want to bring their own music into the iA, two USB ports and an Auxiliary input are standard. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel by using Voice Recognition to control many of the multi-media system features. An available navigation system is also offered through Scion dealers.

2016 Scion iA Engine

The basic ingredients: a high-strength body structure, quick-revving, high-compression 1.5-liter engine with 106 hp; choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions; standard 16-inch alloy wheels, and manufacturer-estimated fuel economy ratings of 33 city / 42 highway / 37 combined MPG.

The mechanics of the iA include a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 106 hp hooked up to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Company officials peg the car’s fuel economy estimates at 33 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, and 37 mpg combined. Befitting a small, budget car, the suspension components include MacPherson struts up front and torsion beam in back. Scion claims that the iA is aimed at finding the right balance of “sporty handling and comfortable ride not normally associated with this segment.” Sounds promising.

The Scion iA is sized very closedly to the sedan versions of the Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic, Kia Rio, and Nissan Versa, among others. The overall length for the iA is about 172 inches, with a width of 66.7 inches, height of 58.5 inches, and it’s built on a 101.2-inch wheelbase the same as the new Mazda CX-3 and upcoming Mazda 2.

The 2016 Scion iA is going to be offered with only one engine, which is the part of their sales tactics to be as easy as possible for the buyer to choose. The engine in question is 1.5L SkyActiv engine with four cylinders, but it will not have SkyActiv branding under the hood (photo below). This engine produces 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. The customers will be able to choose between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Expected fuel economy is 33/42/37 mpg city/highway/combined.
