It came with sixth generation of Golf and it is available from early 2012 in North America. The hatchback that sets the standards for five doors across the globe is dropping the hammer this spring with its most powerful version to date, with the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R. While the V-dub crowd here in the States have been eagerly awaiting this hottest of hatches, they’ve also been lamenting the fact that it would arrive exclusively with VW’s Direct Shift Gearbox. This was disappointing to learn because manual is already being offered in the European-spec Golf R.

The 2016 Golf R will be based on the seventh-generation model, but it will feature many unique details. On the front end, it will get new bumper, modified grille and also newly developed LED daytime running lights. The rear end will be characterized by an “R” design diffuser and a sports exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. The 2016 Golf R will feature specially designed 18-inch aluminum wheels and it will be offered in an exclusive Lapis Blue Metallic paint, with another seven exterior colors. Some of the highlights will be sports seats wrapped in dark or light Nappa leather, then three-spoke steering wheel, light-blue tachometer and speedometer, “Carbon Touch” design panels and many “R” badges all around the cabin.

As no surprise, the 2016 Golf R will offer the same treatment seen in the first generation. The model will, of course, come with the same updates that the seventh-gen Golf has, but the new R version will be distinguished by a new bumper design with large air inlets for improved engine cooling. The new Golf R will also get a modified grille that sports an “R” logo, newly developed LED daytime running lights integrated into the bi-xenon headlight housings.

The interior will also be a little bit sportier than we’re used to seeing in the GTI. It will get sports seats up front wrapped in dark or light Nappa leather on the center with the head restraints upholstered in dark “Carbon” Nappa leather.

2016 Volkswagen Golf R Engine

The 2016 Golf R will be powered with the same turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder TSI engine which is now redesigned and comes with improvements both in terms of power and economy. This engine now outputs 290 horses and 280 lb-ft of max torque. This amount of power will be delivered to all wheels through 6-speed manual transmission, while six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission will be available as optional. Standard 2016 Golf R will be able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, while model with dual-clutch transmission will be able to make it in less than five.

The new Golf R will deliver about 34 horsepower more than the previous generation, but even so, it will be more fuel efficient than its predecessor and a bit faster.
