2016 Volkswagen Passat CC

This mid-size sedan was originally launched in 1973 and so far, we have seen five design and seven generations overall. This car is positioned between Jetta (Golf) and Phaeton in current VW line-up. Although current model for American market was released in 2011, company already plans to launch new model, which will be called 2016 VW Passat and which will come only year after European version, which is already under production.

Volkswagen’s Geneva auto show array of new and freshened sheetmetal had limited relevance to the U.S. market, where the company’s sales have been declining recently in the midst of generally robust performance by most other participants. The U.S. Passat, in particular, has been disappointing. Designed specifically for U.S. buyers and built in a new U.S. plant, the mid-size sedan posted strong sales in 2012, but fell off in the second half of 2013 and is down again the first two months of this year.

Volkswagen continues to make slow, steady strides in the U.S. market, and the automaker has plans to improve its existing lineup and introduce new products to further the VW Group’s mission of becoming the world’s largest automaker. We sat down with newly appointed Volkswagen of America president and CEO Michael Horn, along with vice president of product and strategy Joerg Sommer, in New York to learn more about what the brand has in the pipeline.

2016 VW Passat Design

The 2016 VW Passat will come with many improvements in order to regain its position in North America. This mid-size segment is considered as one of the most-competitive ones, so there is a big challenge for German engineers. New model will be based in VW’s new MQB platform and it will undergo many changes. The appearance of 2016 Passat will be more attractive but you shouldn’t expect some radical changes. It will definitely follow company’s new design language, so expect to see front fascia similar to other VW models. Rear end will also get new-designed taillights and new rounded bumper, while the side parts will be very similar to the current model. The 2016 VW Passat will be offered in two body styles sedan and sport wagon. It will be around 190 lbs lighter compared to current model, because of use of new, light materials like aluminum and high-strength steel. The interior will be full of comfort and luxury. There will be also plenty of hi-tech features and one of the highlights will be new 12.3 inch touchscreen, probably largest in the class.

Dr. Neusser admitted that the Passat and other Volkswagens could benefit from shorter product cycles for U.S. customers, “more oriented to fresh outside designs.” Refraining from specifics, Mr. Horn acknowledged the upcoming Passat makeover. “We are quite aware that we have to do something to keep the car fresh in the market,” he said. Beyond cosmetics, that will include “a lot of new features, driver’s assistance systems and so forth.”

2016 Volkswagen Passat Specs

Volkswagen debuted its refreshed 2015 Jetta in New York last week, but a new model based on the same modular MQB architecture as the Mark-7 Golf is planned for 2017. Switching to the new platform should help the model shed some weight and improve fuel economy. The Golf Sportwagen TDI 4Motion concept, which also debuted for the U.S. in New York, presented an interesting dilemma for Volkswagen, as it sees the Jetta name replaced by the Golf moniker. Horn said this was discussed at length, but that it was ultimately decided that the car would come here as a Golf (a historically lower-volume nameplate in the U.S.) because of its MQB underpinnings and Mark-7 Golf front and rear styling. Though the Golf Sportwagen TDI 4Motion is presented as a concept, the Mexico-built front-drive Sportwagen will go on sale in the U.S. early next year.

2016 Volkswagen Passat Engine

For now, we can only speculate about possible options. It is expected that current line-up will remain for next few years, when some new units will be introduced. The most attractive variant will be one with 2.0 liter TDI engine which delivers 236 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. It is also expected that 2016 Passat will come in hybrid variant, which will probably be consisted of 1.4 liter TFSI petrol engine and electromotors, with total output of around 200 horses.
