2017 Volvo S90 Release Date

The name S90 was first introduced by Volvo in 1996 while renaming the 960 model for certain worldwide markets. With the discontinuation of the midsize 900 Series by the Swedish international manufacturing company in 1998, the 2014 model Volvo S80 was rolled in as the substitute to the S90 that is being available in the today’s market. The S90 model also marked the conclusion of a period for Volvo, being the most recent back-wheel-drive vehicle, wearing the badge of Volvo.

Fresh off the launch of its redesigned XC90 crossover, Volvo follows up with the 2017 Volvo S90 sedan. Scheduled to go on sale in late 2016, the S90 is an all-new model that replaces the current S80. With a sharply styled front end and flared rear quarters, the S90, at least judging from spy photos and concept cues, should cut a more striking figure than the anonymous lines of the S80.

The new sedan will need all it can get to stand out among its intended competitors: the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. A small but powerful engine will help, as will the likely availability of an even stronger gas-electric hybrid combination and a classy interior marked by glacial Swedish cool. Only under-delivered fuel economy estimates — a genuine disappointment we’ve observed in the XC90 and S60 — can keep the S90 from being taken seriously by luxury sedan buyers.

The S80 has been continuing with the luxurious inheritance of S90 for the past two generations. The first-generation model survived between 1998 and 2006, whereas the second-generation vehicle will be discontinued following almost a decade on the market. Now, for the model year 2017, Volvo is going to introduce the revamped edition of the current XC90 with the name, 2017 Volvo S90 sedan. The 2017 model is expected to be released as a more upscale substitute to its range-leading sedan.

2017 Volvo S90 Specs

The new Volvo sedan comes with the same cabin as that of the XC90, which will be luxurious and attractive. The cabin of the new sedan appears identical on the inside, with minor revisions made to the door panels and dashboard. The dashboard is slightly slimmer and has superior wood inserts and taller air-conditioning vents on the middle stack, but others remained unchanged. The new S90 also comes with the Sensus Connect touch-screen that was first introduced in the XC90 model, including the muddle-free stack with minimum dashboard keys.

The seats, center console, instrument cluster and the steering wheel appear to be the same as those of the XC90. Although the door panels inside the cabin come with some noticeable changes, the overall feel remains unaffected from the new vehicle, meaning it appears cooler and more luxurious.

A radical exit from the current model of the XC90, the next generation Volvo S90 comes with the same external design lingo as that of its predecessor. As a result, it comes outfitted with the same grille and the Thor’s Hammer LED daylight running lights. Although the headlights are as slim as those of the XC90, they have a simpler form toward the fenders, offering the new sedan an additional consistent look. Down below, the new vehicle comes outfitted with an athletic front bumper with a spacious intake and a projecting element, similar to a splitter.

The Volvo S90 2017 side profile features a sleeker silhouette because of the roofline, similar to a coupe, a notchback-fashioned trunk lid, and longer back windows. The vehicle comes with the same high waistline as that of its predecessor, but it received a considerably longer wheelbase.

Around rear, the rear bumper resembles that of the S80, with the remaining elements are new to the nameplate, counting the C-shaped tail lamps, the fresh trunk lid, and the bigger Volvo inscription between the tail lamps, but the new vehicle does not have a chrome trim like the S80.
The 2017 model S90 is 4.3 inches longer, 1.1 inches broader, and 4.1inches longer wheelbase than those of its predecessor. It comes with the overall external dimensions of 195.39″ (L) x 79.48″ (W) x 56.81″ (H), with the wheelbase length of 115.78 inches.

2017 Volvo S90 Engine

It is no surprise that 2017 S90 borrows its engines from the XC90, which has been outfitted with many latest technologies. Although, the automaker has not yet reveal the powertrain figures of the engines, it revealed that the new vehicle will be powered by T5 and T6 gasoline engines, D4 and D5 diesel engines, and with a T8 hybrid engine that will be combined with a four-cylinder traditional engine with the displacement of 2.0 liters. The US version would come outfitted with T5, T6, and T8 engines, whereas the European new S90s will be powered by the T6, T8, D4 and D5 engines.

Regarding gasoline engines, the T5 turbocharged engine would generate the greatest power of 254 ponies and the greatest torque of 258 pounds per foot whereas the T6 mill with a supercharger and a turbocharger would generate 316 ponies of maximum power and 295 pounds per foot of maximum torque. Regarding 2017 Volvo S90 diesel variants, the D4 engine would generate 190 ponies of greatest power and 295 pounds per foot of maximum torque whereas the D5 produces 225 ponies of greatest power and 346 pounds per foot of greatest torque.

The S90 will use the same engine found in the XC90: a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged (yes, both) four-cylinder rated at 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Although we’ve found this engine a bit wheezy in the XC90, needing nearly 8 seconds to reach 60 mph, the four-cylinder might be a better fit with the presumably lighter S90 sedan.

Like the XC90, the S90 should also be available as a plug-in hybrid. This model would pair the same four-cylinder engine with an electric motor fed by a battery pack for total output of nearly 400 hp. That should liven up acceleration considerably; the XC90 with the same combination gets to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, Volvo says.

When coming to the hybrid variant, the T8 hybrid engine comes with the combination of a four-banger 2.0-liter capacity traditional engine and a 60-kW capacity electric motor. This combination offers the new S90 the total power and torque output of 400 ponies and 472 pounds per foot respectively. The 2017 S90 is capable of covering a maximum distance of 25 miles solely on electric power. All these 2017 Volvo S90 engines make it to attain the speed of 60 mph from the static mode in 6 seconds and to attain the highest velocity of 155 mph.
